In December 2009 we travelled through Sri Lanka, where we visited Pakkiyam National College in Matale, a girls’ high school and co-ed primary school. We learned that even though many of the girls were achieving top scores in the national university entrance exam, their families weren't able to pay the A$50/month required to send them to university. Many younger children also had to leave school because families couldn't afford basic school materials. We discovered that the teachers had contributed from their own wages what they could to help the children continue their education.
We would like to help these children as a start and then expand this concept of empowering children in situations of poverty through education. Our funds will be available to all children regardless of race, religion and ethnic background.
